One
extremely rare condition (there have been a total of 9 people suffering
by it for the entire period of 5 years between 1998 and 2003) that
affects only first-time surfers. Surfer’s Myelopathy, as it is called,
has not been proven as a permanent condition, but that there are not
enough cases for such a conclusion is more probable. The condition is
caused only when a surfer enters the waters for the first time. The
position and movement of the board and water cause some damage to the
spine, leading to the Myelopathy.
Out
of the 9 known cases that have been monitored in the mentioned period
concluded that three of them lost some of the normal functions of their
urination, four received persistent weakness in some part of the body, a
third were able to reach a full recovery and only one is suffering from
permanent paraplegia.
